SOMALIA
The Innocent Victims

Somalia is currently  one of the most dangerous and difficult countries in the world  to work in.

Somalia also has the highest number of internally displaced people (IDP’s), people who have been forced to flee from their homes  due to violence and fighting.

The fighting is between government forces and  gunmen loyal to the hard-line  fundamentalist group, Al Shabaab.

According to the UN, Somalia is currently the “WORLD’S WORST HUMANITARIAN CRISIS”

In Somalia tens of thousands of children are suffering from violence and famine (through drought), many have lost their parents and homes, they are not being educated and do not have access to health clinics let alone  clean water and a meal (things we take for granted)

As with any  natural disaster,  drought, famine , war  or conflict,  children are always  the worst affected , the innocent victims.

Over the years  of working in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan,  Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Sudan, Ethiopia and  throughout Africa I have come in contact with thousands of  traumatised children, many who have lost parents to violence , tens of thousands  of malnourished children suffering through famine  and not to mention those suffering from sickness or disease . It is very difficult to deal with.  I have often wondered what  it would be like if it was one of my own children.

The task is so vast  and the needs so great it makes one feel quite helpless, but it is always better to help someone than no-one, to do something rather than  do nothing.

I would like to introduce you to 9 innocent victims who represent many thousands of other Somali children whose stories may never be told.

Hussein, an 11-year old boy from Madina  just  outside Mogadishu. He and his two sisters were  sent from the conflict area after their father disappeared during an insurgent attack on their neighbourhood.

Najah, a 5-year old girl from Mogadishu. She , her brother and two sisters fled the conflict area after their father was killed in a mortar attack on the market-place in Mogadishu.

Hussein, a 12-year old boy from Karan. He, his brother and two sisters fled the conflict area after their father was killed in a militia operation in Mogadishu.

Wiila, a 10-year old girl from Madina. She fled the conflict area after her parents and grandmother were killed in a militia operation in Madina.

Fuhad, a 10-year old boy from Madina. He, his two brothers and one sister were moved by car by concerned neighbours from the conflict area after their father was killed in a skirmish in Madina.

Hamda, an 11-year old girl from Black Sea (outside Mogadishu). She and her three brothers (one of whom is mentally retarded) made their way (alone) to Hargeisa on foot and by scrounging lifts, after their father was killed in Mogadishu.

Ibrahim, an 8-year old boy from Madina. He, his three brothers and two sisters were brought to Hargeisa by neighbours after their family was killed by militia.

Dek, a 6-year old boy from Mogadishu. He, his two brothers and two sisters were sent to Hargeisa by bus after their father was killed by in a night-time skirmish between unknown forces

Rahma, a 6-year old girl from Mogadishu. She was sent to Burco and then to Hargeisa by bus after her father was mutilated and beheaded in the family home in Mogadishu

Its not so much about feeding children, its more about making a difference in a child’s life, showing that someone cares for them, that they are not forgotten.
