| 5.5
million children died last year because of malnutrition.
That’s 15,000 little boys and girls a day -- precious children
whose lives were lost simply because they didn’t get enough
nutritious food to eat.
Malnutrition is
the #1 killer of children - particularly small
children under five whose strength and resistance
are limited. Referred to as "the invisible
emergency" because its deadly effects are often
not apparent until the damage is already done,
malnutrition killed 5.5 million children last year
and retarded the physical and mental development
of millions of others, cutting off their hope for
a more productive future.
Children’s
Hunger Relief Fund provides
millions of life-saving meals to
hungry children every year. Some
of this aid is in the form of short-term
disaster
relief. We also support
a number of ongoing feeding programs
through our numerous children’s homes. Other
strategies are more long-term – for
example, food
gardens, sustainable
agriculture projects and micro-enterprise
programs.
Our
goal is to pursue a grass roots strategy
to solving hunger. All of our ongoing feeding
programs are run by local community leaders.
We don’t
want to “feed and run” – we
want to “feed and build,” thereby
strengthening local capacity to provide
for their own future development.
