Project Update

March 2010

“Increased violence has created more refugees. Currently there are 296,000 people - mostly children – who are homeless, jobless and hungry. In spite of the increasing violence and danger, our teams persist in going into the most remote areas to find families that no-one else is helping.”

Armed soldiers and police man roadblocks  throughout Kabul

Rebuilding  Kabul is slow, damaged buildings from the Russian war  can  still be seen.

We distribute food packages  directly to IDP families in  the  camps.  The only women permitted to collect food aid are widows who are generally treated as outcasts, otherwise it is normally the husbands  or men.

Delivery & distribution of  food packages to families displaced by fighting, “Internally Displaced People” (IDP’s). These people have fled the fighting  & violence in Helmand province  and now surviving in appalling conditions outside Kabul, most have few possessions and are not receiving any assistance

750 families each received a food package

Each package included 20kg flour, 1kg oil, .5kg tea, 3kg beans, 2kg sugar, 3 kg rice, 1kg salt.

Total weight          =  22.8 Tons

Cost per package = $25

Security is poor, kidnappings and attacks  occur regularly, recently a Canadian was kidnapped in this camp. Foreigners / Westerners are advised to stay out of  these camps.

Life on the run is difficult, but the living conditions in these camps are  almost unbearable

Some possessions that  IDP’s managed to escape with. The shelters and walls are made with mud and provide temporary shelter.

Many Afghan children have been  affected by ongoing violence and fighting, some  have been injured, some crippled, some have lost their lives , but all are traumatised as a result of war

The women lying down on the mat was seriously sick and needed medical attention

Life for IDP’s in refugee type camps  outside Kabul is difficult, no electricity, no running or clean water, no sanitation and no official assistance

We now support 32 Afghan orphans  (full cover) in Kabul, the support  includes clothing, education/school, 3 meals per day, recreation/sport, medical issues, living in a good secure home  &  transport .  They are also  loved and well cared for.  Fully comprehensive cover works out  on average to $81 per month per child.

Thank you for supporting those who are suffering in Afghanistan and for your prayers for this trip.
