"Even in the 21st century, hunger continues as the number one risk to health worldwide. More people die from hunger and related diseases than from AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined."

James T. Morris
Executive Director, World Food Program

It seems impossible to imagine that 800 million people go to bed hungry everyday. In Africa alone, over 40 million people faced starvation in 2003. To avert this terrifying nightmare, World Food Program announced a Hunger Alert Campaign to urge the world not to let Africa waste away. Through CHRF, thousands of Americans responded quickly, generously, and effectively.

WORDS FROM ZAMBIA

"Nothing could prepare you for what I saw. The drought has completely wasted the area. There are no crops, and a general sense of desperate hopelessness lies heavy on the ground. Families are boiling poisonous roots and eating leaves, and children are killing family pets in desperation..." Emergency Relief Director, CHRF

Without a doubt, hunger is the first emergency in any crisis. And when such a crisis occurs, Children's Hunger Relief Fund is ready to deliver tons of food to victims of famine, flood, or drought. At times like that, our rapid response can make a difference between life and death.

In 2003, we dispatched our Emergency Response Team to deliver over 167 tons of food directly into the hands of hungry people of Afghanistan, Iraq, Mozambique, South Africa, Sudan, Zambia, and Zimbabwe as well as over $33,000,000 worth of aid to thousands of desperate families worldwide.

Serving over 1 million meals directly in response to emergency situations could only be achieved through the generosity of our donors.
